Zinc, the holy grail for skin health.

Zinc – its the holy grail for skin health and an essential mineral for any acne repair plan.

Why we love zinc for hormonal acne:

  • Zinc is one of several natural androgen blockers that can reduce testosterone and improve androgen symptoms such as acne and hirsutism (facial hair). It works by inhibiting 5α-reductase and decreasing the production of DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
  • Zinc works by lowering inflammation, killing bacteria and slowing the production of sebum and keratin (excellent for post pill skin support).
  • Zinc also helps reduce acne scarring as it promotes skin cell renewal, yes please!

Zinc deficiency:

Getting enough zinc in the diet can be difficult at times and zinc deficiency affects one in three women. Zinc deficiency is also more common amongst women who are vegetarian or vegan, this is because plant foods are low in zinc.

Zinc absorption can be depleted by hypothyroidism, alcohol and medications such as the oral contraceptive pill.

Symptoms of a zinc deficiency can include:

  • An impaired immune system.
  • White spots on your fingertips.
  • Hair loss.
  • Dermatitis.

Foods high in zinc:

Zinc based foods include

  • Lean cuts of red meat.
  • Asparagus.
  • Spinach.
  • Pumpkin seeds.
  • Sea foods such as oysters and mussels.

Zinc supplementation and dosages:

It can be difficult getting enough zinc through the diet. Therefore, obtaining adequate levels through supplementation can be the best way to go, especially for an acne repair plan.

Dose and safety:

A safe and effective dose of zinc is 30 mg per day. There are different forms of zinc however, we usually prescribe zinc bisglycinate as it’s well absorbed and gentle on the stomach.

Note: your zinc supplement should be taken after a meal because zinc on an empty stomach can cause nausea. Note: More than 80 mg per day can deplete copper so it’s important to seek the guidance of a naturopathic practitioner.

Hormonal acne takes a multifaceted approach, supplementation is part of the solution, however guidance under a naturopath and a personalised acne repair program is always recommended
